Luke 20 1-8 ~ One day Jesus was teaching the people in the Temple, proclaiming the Message. The high priests, religion scholars, and leaders confronted him and demanded, “Show us your credentials. Who authorized you to speak and act like this?” Jesus answered, “First, let me ask you a question: About the baptism of John—who authorized it, heaven or humans?”
They were on the spot, and knew it. They pulled back into a huddle and whispered, “If we say ‘heaven,’ he’ll ask us why we didn’t believe him; if we say ‘humans,’ the people will tear us limb from limb, convinced as they are that John was God’s prophet.” They agreed to concede that round to Jesus and said they didn’t know.
Jesus said, “Then neither will I answer your question.”
“Show us your credentials. Who authorized you to speak and act like this?”
The spirit which prompted this demand is too evident to be mistaken. These men hated and envied Christ. They saw His influence increasing. They saw their own power diminishing. They resolved to stop the progress of this new teacher; and the point on which they made their assault was His authority.
Every true-hearted Christian who tries to do good in the world, must make up their mind to be treated in this manner. The world's opposition is sure to attend every really good work. We must never be surprised to find that the self-righteous and the worldly-minded dislike His ways.
Let all who are attacked by the world for trying to do good, take comfort in the thought that they are only drinking the bitter cup which Christ drank. Christ sympathizes with us. Let’s continue to work with patience and persistence. Believe that our faithful work will speak for itself.
